Has Palin Derangement Syndrome Hit the GOP? [UPDATED]
Posted by: Gribbit // Category: General, Gribbit, Guest ContributorsLast night on YGCRadio, a caller seemed to be suffering from the same dysfunction that viewers of MSNoBodyCares suffer from – namely Palin Derangement Syndrome. Our caller is already so in the bag for Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty it caused me to speculate if he resides under Tim’s desk! The exchange got me to wondering if the GOP is riddled with this same dysfunction. It also caused me to do some deep analysis of Gov. Palin’s surprise resignation.
On the resignation I have come up with a theory*. It is my belief that Gov. Palin will take a stab at unseating Senator Liza Murkowsky. Murkowsky isn’t the most reliable GOP vote on the Hill. She’s pro-choice and has voted to open up more lines of embryonic stem cells for research. Each of these is loathsome enough for Conservative voters alone, but combining them puts Murkowsky in a position of weakness against a more socially Conservative challenger such as Sarah Palin.
Ask yourself a question. Why, would Haley Barbour assume the Chair of the Republican Governor’s Association when Palin is a more popular Republican Governor and the Party’s last Nominee for Vice President if she didn’t already have a plan in place? She was the logical choice for taking the vacated position not Barbour who is at the end of his last term as Mississippi Governor.
Combine that fact with another about Barbour. Gov. Barbour is a rock-star in his own right. He is extremely popular in his state especially after his handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Many forget that as bad as New Orleans got hit by the after-math of Katrina, Mississippi got hit harder by the direct impact of the storm itself. The problems in New Orleans were caused by an ineffective Governor (Blanco) and an inept Mayor (Nagin) who refused to issue evacuation orders upon the President’s suggestion for 3 days. Many people died in New Orleans because of the stupidity of 2 Democrats. But Barbour handled Mississippi’s side of the disaster masterfully. As the former RNC Chair, a popular Governor, and now the Chair of the Republican Governor’s Association, Haley Barbour is a cinch to run for President in 2012. This complicates things for Palin who admittedly has very little experience in national politics.
Solution? Get some experience.
Barack Obama began running for President 11 months into his first and only term as United States Senator. He never served as the chief administrator of any government. Never served as the head of any sized business. He never completed anything in his adult life with the exception of degree work. Barack Obama has been a complete and utter failure at everything that he’s ever tried except degree work and running for President.
Sarah is still very popular in her home state and beyond. She would represent a reliable GOP vote in the Senate and possibly a key figure in the Senate’s GOP leadership. Barry was nothing more than the left’s chance at getting a minority elected.
The caller last night railed on Palin over her decision to resign with 18 months left in office. She explained her decision to resign. She did not want to be the same old lame duck type who collects a check while the state legislature walks all over her. Instead she is giving her Lt. Governor a shot to do the people of Alaska some good instead of being a seat warmer for the next 18 months. Someone who plans on running for Governor in 2010.
The decision had to come now in order to put together a team to challenge Murkowsky. The decision had to be made now so that she wasn’t splitting her responsibilities. This decision allows Palin to give her full attention to winning the nomination rather than trying to play half candidate and half Governor.
I’m sorry to inform the PDS sufferers out there, but Sarah is wiser than you think.
Again I must stress this is only theory*. I have no special insight as to what Governor Palin’s plans are. But a logical analysis of the situation leads me to this conclusion. A run for the Senate is good for Palin, good for Alaska, and good for America.

[UPDATE 1316 EDT]
This just in via email…
Reacting to Gov. Sarah Palin’s stunning resignation announcement Friday, political analyst and best-selling author Dick Morris said the former vice presidential candidate is likely freeing herself up for a run for the U.S. Senate next year or the presidency in 2012.
Still digesting the surprising news Friday just after Palin’s announcement, Morris offered four possibilities behind Palin’s reasoning:
Palin could be preparing to challenge Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary in 2010. Palin defeated Murkowski’s father, former Gov. Frank Murkowski, in the 2006 Republican primary. She’s fed up with politics because of “all the personal garbage she’s been subject to” and could be looking at a career as an author or even TV personality. She wants to run full-time for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. Now is simply not a good time to be governor because every state is facing shortfalls and Palin is dealing with a hostile legislature and Democratic critics who have showered her with unfounded ethics complaints. “And then of course there’s the possibility of something we don’t know about, and in that case, we’ll just have to see,” Morris said.

From Townhall.com another look at Palin’s decision that makes more sense than our caller’s Pawlenty ass kissing and anti-Palin diatribe.
