Taliban threaten Afghan voters in November runoff

There are those inside of the Conservative Movement who are good-hearted and wise-thinking people who mean well when they suggest that America not be part of any foreign mischief-making. This is the tact that Thomas Jefferson took in the early part of his administration as second president of the United States. However, he was faced with a crisis caused by Barbary Pirates interfering with American commerce within the Mediterranean. Had he followed his own advice, he would have done what other spineless governments in Europe (minus Great Britain, who had some stones even after the American debacle) would have done and paid tribute to the terrorists (and that’s precisely what they were, not much different from the monsters hiding in caves in the Afghan-Pakistani border). Thankfully, Jefferson did have a spine, as well as a change of heart. The American Navy and Marine Corps would prove themselves by eradicating that enemy, making commerce a relatively safe venture again.

I give you the brief history lesson, that surely most of you already know, in order to persuade you Conservatives who prefer isolation to keep at it in Afghanistan. The place is a hell-hole now, but there was a time three decades ago where Kabul was a pretty modern city, where women had access to education, and there the veil wasn’t mandatory among less fanatical members of society. The Afghans have a chance now to have new leadership installed on their vote, provided we monitor the hell out of elections there to prevent another stolen election by Hamid Kharzai, once thought of as a friend to this country, now seen as little more than a vote-robber. The wild-card in these elections will be the Taliban, who threaten voters who participate in what is their right to form their future. Demand to President Obama to quit dithering and send troops now, or abandon Afghanistan a second time and end up with the possibility of another 9/11.
